2019 year in review

(More info on my wedding photography, click here.)

Welcome 2020! How have you arrived so fast?

What a year but it’s not only the last year I have to think about, it’s the last decade but that is going to come later, lets just stick to 2019.

So lets recap to the end of 2018 and that review. What had I planned for 2019? I wanted to start the process to becoming a better photographer, making sure that I did not get stuck in a rut that most photographers who hit the 10 year mark (of yeah, also got that to talk about, 10 years as a wedding photographer) often do.

I am going to try and keep this as short as possible, like my talking, I could go on for pages & pages.

2019 was set to be my busiest year with weddings with August being the most number of weddings in a month and I was very excited. Not only that but I had two landscape workshops in the Faroe Islands.

I spent the start of the year getting everything organised and ready for the year. I was excited!

Personally it was a crazy year with Iris being accepted to go back to University to study to be a midwife, we moved house, leaving Lhanbryde and having to paint a WHOLE house back to magnolia. We found our new house in Oldmeldrum ( my home town) and then had to paint that whole house WHITE. All in the space of 2 weeks! Did I say it was crazy, but also crazy lucky that it all worked out.

Iris started University a week before I left the family to spend a month in the Faroe Islands running THREE landscape workshops and two weddings.

I had the pleasure of working with an amazing photographer Scott Johnston from the Edge Photography. Scott joined me in the Faroe Islands for a week of landscape and wedding photography. I am very excited about future shenanigans with Scott.

In whole, I had the most amazing year with epic couples! I have been lucky to photograph in incredible venues and with talented suppliers, some of which I am lucky to even call friends.

I launched my adventure sessions which was a huge success and already I have been in some beautiful locations to photograph couples back in their wedding gear.

I worked with the talented Bonsai Productions to create 4 amazing videos detailing my photography, please click below and watch

But it’s not all been wonderful and amazing. 2019 has also been one of the toughest in the 10 years as a Photographer.

The sudden change in our personal life, with house move and so on took a lot of energy and time. Often having to pack/move/paint during the day and edit until the early hours of the morning.

Being out of the country with the landscape workshops often meant that I was not around to communicate with clients in my normal time.

With so many weddings, editing and trying to find time with the family, some aspects of business life struggled. One has been client communication. My emails would pile up and often take days to clear. My emails are not a simple reply and done, more often they involved an action that could take 5 minutes or even hours to solve and this caused a big problem.

I have felt that I was constantly apologising and this has had such a negative effect on myself and my creativity. It really made me questions the path I was on and if I was good enough to be a photographer that people deserve. It took me months to get out of this frame of mind.

BUT with our failures and mistakes that we make, we learn and grow as a person, a creative and also as business. I made mistakes in 2019 and 2020 will be a better year as I know where I went wrong and will not allow it to happen again.

So now that is the negative over and done with, lets recap 2019 with the slideshow and below is where I go forward, the plan and what I want for 2020.

Enjoy the slideshow and remember to please share and read on below the slide show.

So 2020, whats it going to be? Forward, back or a different direction?

Onwards and upward. The road of progression is long and not easy. If it was, everyone would be going it. I have a starting plan and that is what is important. I know the direction I want to go in, I have started laying the building blocks and meeting people who are going to help along the road.

I am grateful for the people around me, these people help me when I am down and celebrate when I am up. If it was not for these people, I would not have achieved what I have now and I have it good! So I want to thank by supportive and patient partner Iris how has supported me since the day I met her and I look forward to supporting you with your dream, my amazing two wild boys who give me drive but also keep me on my toes, my parents for the support, The amazing Mairi from Fastlane Fitness for pushing my fitness and also was reminding me how much I like to push the limits (i’m excited for 2020) and of course Louise Malcolm who you might know as my second shooter. To Kirstie & Sabine for helping second shoot weddings when louise was unavailable.

Louise is an incredible person who has helped for me for many years, she brings me food at weddings, kicks my ass when I need it and I know that I can rely on her to do what she does. Louise, you are a legend and I look forward to what we have in store for 2020.

A big thank you to ross Eaglesham for the fun chats on our podcast and helping with weddings.

So as 2019 has ended, 2020 is here and a new decade. I cannot wait to capture the amazing moments, meet new friends and catch up up with old friends. I look forward to growing as a photographer with new creative possibilities.

Here is to fresh beginnings.
